On the opening day of the first four-day game between South Africa A and India A, the hosts grabbed the early advantage after winning the toss and opting to bat first at the Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday (August 12). Riding on a solid ton from opening batsman Stephen Cook and a fine fifty from David Miller in the middle order, the Proteas posted a patient 270 in the 88 overs bowled in the day.

Opening the innings for South Africa A, Cook started off in a vigilant manner along side captain Aiden Markram. As the duo took their time and settled in for a wicketless opening session, left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem removed the skipper in the 23rd over when he got him caught by Shreyas Iyer on 22. Cook, unfazed, continued patiently to forge his next partnership with Rudi Second, adding 73 runs for the second wicket. Just when the second-wicket stand started to look ominous for the tri-series winners India A, Second was bowled by Mohammed Siraj.

Cook went on to score his hundred while batting with Miller, and that was when first signs of positivity was seen in the South African innings. Miller's well noted flamboyance was on picture as he struck the most number of boundaries by any batsman on the day, hitting 10 of them along with a six to his credit. However, Miller's sojourn towards a hundred was curtailed when he was caught and bowled by Siraj on 78.

India struck back again within a space of three overs to send back centurion Cook, two overs before Stumps on the first day. Nadeem's wicket of Cook ensured that even if South Africa A held advantage, the visitors had managed to steal some bit of the momentum by the end of the day's play. Both Beuran Hendricks and Khaya Zondo remained unbeaten on nought and will look to start afresh on Day 2 to build on the solid platform laid by Cook and Miller.

Brief Scores: South Africa A 270/4 (Stephen Cook 120, David Miller 78; Mohammed Siraj 2-51, Shahbaz Nadeem 2-77) vs India A.
