If we could add another reason as to why the IPL 2020, the 13th edition, should have happened, it is because the tournament will provide a good practice session to Indian players for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The iconic series which highlights the cricket rivalry between India and Australia is scheduled to take place in Australia from 3 December onwards.

This statement came from the former Australian legend, Ian Chappell. Talking exclusively to ESPNcricinfo, the 76 year old said,

"One thing is certain: where there’s a will, there’s a way, and the better players are dedicated to finding a solution. In the case of Indian players, and some of the Australians, they will at least have some challenging IPL cricket in the lead-up to the December series"

This is in contrast to his previous statement where he said IPL might not be a good preparation session for a tough test series.

Chappell emphasized the fact that if you want cricket to restart after the pandemic, you have to find a way. Players were under quarantine, hence the Australian legend was concerned about the fitness level of players.

Lauding the BCCI for organizing successfully IPL 13, he goes on to say that it'll help players get into shape for the bilateral series to be played in Australia. Not only the Indian players, the IPL will also be a good cricketing tour for Aussie players. A total of 19 players will be playing at this year's IPL, some of whom will also feature in the Border-Gavaskar trophy. The participating Australian players along with English players were bought into the IPL from England in a separate charter flight.

The 13th edition of IPL started from 19th of September amidst much uncertainty. All the Indian players and staff members were flown to UAE and now are housed in a bio bubble. This is to ensure the tournament remains free from COVID-19 contamination. The upcoming Border-Gavaskar trophy will also be played under such a bubble.

The IPL will conclude on 10 November. The last league match which is between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians will be played on 3rd of November. The Indian players will then fly directly to Australia where they'll be in a two-week quarantine period. Meanwhile, Australian players might get a break and will be allowed to visit their respective homes before they head back to the bio bubble.

Before the Border-Gavaskar trophy, Australia is scheduled to play a one-off test against Afghanistan from 21-25 November.

The Border-Gavaskar trophy will then start from 3rd of December. There will be 4 tests and 3 ODIs.

The schedule is as follows:

  • 1st Test, 3-7 December

  • 2nd Test, 11-15 December

  • 3rd Test, 26-30 December

  • 4th Test, 3-7 December

  • 1st ODI, 12 January

  • 2nd ODI, 15 January

  • 3rd ODI, 17 January

With that said, it remains to see how players will adapt to different playing conditions. But we should expect a good contest between the two cricketing powerhouses.
