Predictions for the Match

KL Rahul will back himself to come good at the Wankhede, while Mayank Agarwal is due a big score as well. Nicholas Pooran has a point to prove after notching up two ducks to start his IPL 2021 campaign. The Chris Gayle vs Ravichandran Ashwin matchup could be an enticing one. The off-spinner has dismissed the Universe Boss five times in the IPL and will fancy his chances against the big-hitting left-hander once again. There is not much to choose between the top orders of DC and PBKS. That means the team that bowls better on the day may emerge victorious. Boasting an all-star bowling line-up, DC are ahead of PBKS in that department. DC would look to end the Mumbai leg of their IPL campaign on a high by downing PBKS at the Wankhede on Sunday. However, Both teams are coming into the defeats in their last games but DC are definitely a better side of paper.

Avg first inning score: 166 runs (4 matches played in IPL 2021 here)

Final Prediction: Delhi Capitals to win the match.

1) If DC won the toss and bowl first, PBKS can score 160-180 runs and DC to win the match.

2) If PBKS won the toss and bowl first, DC can score 170-190 runs and DC to win the match.

Secondary Predictions:

1. Back KL Rahul to score 30+ runs.

2. Back Kagiso Rabada to DC’s best bowler

3. PBKS powerplay score: 45-50 runs.

4. DC Powerplay score: 50-55 runs.

Match Preview

Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant will aim to display better tactical acumen in Catch-22 situations against a ‘blow-hot-blow-cold’ Punjab Kings in what promises to be a battle of brittle middle-orders in an IPL match here on Sunday.

Pant, relatively inexperienced in terms of IPL captaincy, lost the plot in the last game where he didn’t finish his best bowler Ravichndran Ashwin’s quota and instead used Tom Curran’s friendly medium pacers.

As coach Ricky Ponting pointed out, he would expect a better “on his feet” thinking from the young captain.

The likely addition of Anrich Nortje in the playing XI will only bolster Pant’s bowling attack which lost its bearings during the last match with Curran’s lack of pace on a slow track being cannon fodder for Chris Morris and David Miller.

Punjab Kings, on the other hand, suffered an inexplicable batting collapse against Chennai Super Kings with Deepak Chahar’s extra bounce and slight seam movement causing the damage.

This was after a healthy 200 plus total in the opening game.

The nature of the Wankhede track is posing a few questions under lights for top-order batsmen as the last two games have shown with underlying moisture aiding quality fast bowling.

Susceptibility to short balls over his shoulder are not great news for Punjab either.

In case of Punjab Kings, save Mohammed Shami, the two high-priced pacers — Jhye Richardson and Riley Meredith — haven’t exactly set the stage on fire.

Neither has Murugan Ashwin, a mystery spinner who has done nothing of note that would force Pant and Ponting to have sleepless nights.

Anil Kumble and Rahul may like to think of Ravi Bisnoi as an option but they also need to factor in the shorter boundaries in Mumbai, which can be divastating for wrist spinners if their length is haywire.

So KL Rahul versus Kagiso Rabada and Chris Woakes bowling to Chris Gayle could be as enticing as Prithvi Shaw encountering the guile of Mohammad Shami and Shikhar Dhawan trying to unsettle a disciplined Arshdeep Singh.

Jaydev Unadkat and Rajasthan Royals have shown that despite massive improvements, there are still some chinks in Shaw’s armoury and Arshdeep could be used to expose that.

Both teams are top heavy in batting with DC depended on Shaw, Dhawan and Pant for doing the bulk of scoring while the same job profile is held by KL Rahul, Chris Gayle and Deepak Hooda in the Punjab line-up.

Pitch Report

The pitch at the Wankhede Stadium turned out to be batting paradises in the first two games. But in the last two matches, the bowlers, especially the fast bowlers, have extracted a lot from the surface. There have been quite a few mini-collapses. Batting second should be the way forward. The temperature will be around 31 degrees Celsius with the humidity mostly in the 60s.
