Clinical Australia force deflating whitewash on Pakistan

It took all of 15 balls after Dinner to finish off Pakistan on the fourth evening. Josh Hazlewood struck with his first delivery with the second new ball, taking out Mohammad Rizwan on 45 before Mohammad Abbas's run-out sealed a victory by an innings and 48 runs for the hosts. Australia also completed a 2-0 whitewash over Pakistan as a result of this win.

The victory, in essence, was brought about by Nathan Lyon on the final day. The Australia offspinner picked all the five wickets to fall across the first two sessions in Adelaide on Monday (December 2). He used his round-the-wicket angle to good effect, picking both the overnight batsmen -- Asad Shafiq and Shan Masood -- in the first session before castling Iftikhar Ahmed, Yasir Shah and Shaheen Afridi in the second.

Pakistan started the day strong. The pitch was still flat, and the old pink ball not doing enough, and that's exactly what Masood and Shafiq laid into during their 103-run partnership. Masood was on the receiving end of some short balls from Mitchell Starc but he dealt with it relatively well this morning, pulling a couple of them for boundaries. And he launched a six as soon as Lyon came into the attack.

But well set on 71, Masood decided to attack Lyon and handed out a simple catch to mid-off. Shafiq, Masood's partner in the 103-run stand, was more stable at the other end before he came up against some fine bowling and captaincy. From round the wicket to the right-hander, Lyon extracted some turn and bounce and had Shafiq caught at leg-slip 20 minutes out from Tea.

Come the second session, it wasn't quite the unravel that one would have expected from Pakistan. There were a few close shaves but no dice for Australia. Mitchell Starc found a bit of reverse swing and had a tough chance off Mohammad Rizwan's bat fall short of Steve Smith at second slip. There was also a top-edge from Rizwan off Nathan Lyon, that fell between the four men around the bat. Iftikhar got away with a pretty tight French cut but Australia had no wickets to show in the first hour.

Second ball after the drinks break, Lyon found turn and bounce from round the wicket again, and had Iftikhar caught by Marnus Labuschagne at forward short leg. Yasir Shah fell LBW a while later to the very same angle from Lyon, pinned in front by the turn after a barrage of deliveries that skidded across him. All that in the lead up to Lyon striking again in the last over before Tea, when Shaheen Afridi's catch at long-on gave the offspinner his 50th wicket at the Adelaide Oval.

David Warner was named both Player of the Match and Player of the series for his 489 runs across two games, the run tally including his magnificent 335* in the game.

Brief Scores: Australia589/3 dec beat Pakistan302 & 239 (Shan Masood 68, Asad Shafiq 57; Nathan Lyon 5-69, Josh Hazlewood 3-63)by an innings and 48 runs.
