Analysis for the match.

Match 50 of the 2022-23 Big Bash League is the second Sydney derby of the season with the Sixers taking on Thunder at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday evening. Sydney Sixers are in second place and have already qualified for the play-offs. A win for Sydney Thunder will see them go very close to confirming their place in the play-offs. Read on as we preview the game. This match gets underway at the SCG at 19:05 local time.

Sydney Sixers continue to be one of the strongest BBL teams and look to be on course for their fourth successive BBL final. They will come into this derby game full of confidence.

Thunder had been in a very poor run of form before thrashing Melbourne Renegades. A victory over their city rivals will see them move up into fourth place in the table.

Must see point.

1). The Thunder are looking better, but will be outmatched against the Sixers

2). Steve Smith’s recent batting form and Sean Abbott’s great bowling makes the Sixers a huge threat

3). Warner vs. Smith is exciting, but perhaps this rivalry will force someone to make bad shots

Head to Head matches.

Overall Matches - 22

SYS won - 15

SYT won - 7

Last five Head to Heads.

SYS won - 4

SYT won - 1

Match Prediction: SYS to win the match.

1). If SYS won the toss and opted to bowl first, SYT could score 140-160 runs.

2). If SYT won the toss and opted to bowl first, SYS could score 150-170 runs.

Secondary Predictions.

1). Steve Smith total runs - Over 19.5 runs.

Steve Smith hit 101 from 56 balls in the last game and the opener is well worth backing as Sydney Sixers’ highest run scorer against Sydney Thunder.

2). Oliver Davies total runs - Over 20.5 runs

With three half-centuries across this campaign, we are backing Oliver Davies to be Sydney Thunder’s highest run scorer on Saturday evening.

3). Sean Abbott total wickets - Over 1.5 wickets.

After taking 10 wickets from his last four games, we recommend backing Sean Abbott to take over 1.5 wickets in this clash.

Match Preview.

The Sixers’ big news is that star spinner, Nathan Lyon, will be out for a few games with a knee injury. There’s still enough bowling talent on the roster, as both Sean Abbott (20 wickets) and Hayden Kerr (14) continue to shine for the side and keep the Sixers in a strong position.

Great batting is certainly taken care of in the Sixers’ squad, as they’ve got three star batsmen to take the team to the next level. Philippe’s 231 runs keep him as the top scorer, although he’s going to have to look out for Patterson (197) and Smith (137), as both are in great form.

Indeed, Smith’s 101 runs against the Strikers was the first and only century ever scored by a Sixers player! As of now, the Sixers appear to be one of the few teams that can actually challenge the Scorchers at the top of the ladder.

The Thunder surprised everyone with a huge win over the Renegades, especially following three losses in a row and the overall form not looking great.

It goes to show just how unpredictable the BBL can be, as Matthew Gilkes’ 74* was the moment of the match. Gilkes has been solid, but fairly unspectacular all season, so to arrive with 74* is quite the statement.

Warner’s 26 is a step in the right direction, but it was shocking to see the top scorer, Oliver Davies, dismissed for a duck! As we said… anything can happen here.

Daniel Sams continues to take wickets and has 16 overall, although his ER of 11.45 was pretty terrible against the Renegades, as he had one wicket but gave up 45 runs. He’s usually better than this, so there’s no massive reason for concern.

Josh Philippe, Steve Smith and Jordan Silk are our tips with the bat for Sydney Sixers. Both Philippe and Smith have hit at least half-centuries in the last two games and the runs are flowing at the top of the order. Silk has hit over 300 runs across the tournament.

We recommend Oliver Davies, David Warner and Matthew Gilkes as our batting choices for Sydney Thunder. Warner loves the big occasion of a derby game and will look to attack the Sixers bowlers from his first ball. Once Davies gets going, he is very hard to stop in this competition.

Pitch reports.

Spinners are often favored at the SCG pitch, but batters typically make high scores here and as both teams know the ground well, we’re likely to see scores of around 170 or higher.

Team News.

Sydney Sixers>>

Off-spinner Nathan Lyon missed Sydney Sixers’ last game, against Adelaide Strikers in match 45, with a knee complaint and we expect him to not be risked ahead of this match. With an important derby, we anticipate that the Sixers will put out their strongest XI.Sydney Sixers have won their last four BBL games and have lost only one of their last 10.

Possible XI - Josh Philippe (wk), Steven Smith, Kurtis Patterson, Moises Henriques (c), Jordan Silk, Hayden Kerr, Daniel Christian, Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, Steve O'Keefe, Todd Murphy

Sydney Thunder>>

There has been no news on Gurinder Sandhu’s recovery from a calf injury and we assume that he will be unavailable for this game. 22 year old batter, Blake Nikitaras, made his BBL debut in the win over Melbourne Renegades but did not get an opportunity to bat so we expect to see him selected again for this match.Thunder had lost three successive games and were looking in danger of missing the play-offs before winning their last match.

Possible XI - Matthew Gilkes (wk), David Warner, Blake Nikitaras, Oliver Davies, Alex Ross, Daniel Sams, Ben Cutting, Nathan McAndrew, Chris Green (c), Usman Qadir, Brendan Doggett
