Ravi Shashtri has recently criticized KL Rahul’s intent in IPL 2022. Why he is harsh on him even after knowing his fabulous knock of 79 runs off 58 balls in a match against Royal Challengers Bangalore?

I'll analyse Kl Rahul’s innings through some phases. One can then judge how good/bad his inning was.

After 6 overs, at the end of powerplay, LSG were 62/2.

    Kl Rahul’s innings progression,

    Runs - 26

    Balls - 17

    Bat SR - 152.9

    Current Runrate - 10.33, Required Runrate - 10.43

One could say, LSG were almost on track after powerplay. Kl Rahul was striking at nearly 153, which was quite good. So there wasn't anything wrong from his part till then.

After 13 overs, during second timeout, LSG were 109/2.

    Kl Rahul’s innings progression,

    Runs - 48

    Balls - 42

    Bat SR - 114.3

    Current Runrate - 8.38, Required Runrate - 14.14

Look at the drop in Strike rate of Kl Rahul. He was striking at nearly 153 in powerplay, which dropped down to 114 through the middle overs. In 25 balls in the phase, he scored just 22 runs at a Strike rate of just 88, which is simply pathetic.

As a result, Lucknow’s Current runrate dropped down and required runrate went up. 99 from last 7 overs was a big ask in an IPL Knockout game, though they had lost only 2 wickets.

After 18.4 overs, LSG were 180/5.

That's when Kl Rahul was dismissed. His innings progression,

    Runs - 79

    Balls - 58

    Bat SR - 136.2

    Current Runrate - 9.78, Required Runrate - 23.33

By the time Kl was dismissed, LSG were under deep pressure. After the last timeout, he faced 17 balls and scored 31 runs at a Strike rate of 182.4. Though he shifted gears after getting to his fifty, the game had progressed a lot.

Chasing a mammoth 208 in an eliminator, a Strike rate of 136 after playing more than half the number of deliveries in the stay at the crease is simply unacceptable.

IMO, Kl deserves criticism for this knock. Eden Gardens had a fresh pitch. There wasn't any slowness in the surface. It was a flat pitch with no assistance for the spinners. Credits to RCB bowlers for bowling economical overs in the middle phase, but a batter of Kl Rahul’s quality should've did better for his team.
