There are two ways to answer your question. If you ask as per record, he is the best captain of India till date. He won India most number of bilateral series' amd holds the record of most win percentage as a Captain. But when you look for an icc trophy. Shocking but he has not been able to win India a single icc Trophy till today.

He has been good. Wining 11 consecutive tests at home is not an easy job. He also performed well at WC but semi final was some how disappointing. Honestly speaking according to me he has not done well while playing under pressure like in semi final when sharma did not score he was the one who could have performed well but still one bad day does not mean he is a bad captain or a bad player. He has done extremely well and i hope he will lift 2020 trophy.

If you see statistically then Virat Kohli is is one of the most successful Indian team captain right now in the test matches. Yes, he surpassed MS Dhoni in terms of victory.

He is also good in the ODI and T20 format but in terms of big ICC tournament then and he is behind by MS Dhoni who won all the major ICC tournament trophies.

MS Dhoni who won 2007 T- 20 world cup then in 2011 a 50 over world cup and then the Champions Trophy in England who won all the major ICC tournament but for Virat Kohli he has to achieve this landmark yet in his career.

But I hope that soon we will see the big ICC tournament Trophy in Virat Kohli hand and he is still young and has a good team combination with different qualities of player who can perform both inside and outside India so in the upcoming time we will see more success as a captain and as a player Virat Kohli.
